Munawar’s name sent to committee for further consideration

The name referred by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for the position of the Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), Ahmed Munawar, has been referred to the Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts for further consideration.

Munawar who served as a former Minister of Finance was referred for the post of MMA Governor to the Parliament by President Muizzu, following the dismissal of Ali Hashim from the position, following recommendations of the Parliament.

The Parliament also opened for public opinion on the nomination of Munawar to the post of MMA Governor. As such, the public can sent any complaints they have in regards to Munawar to the parliament email, [email protected], before 1400hrs, July 24. The mail should contain the full name, permanent address and the contact number of the sender.

Munawar is currently appointed to the post of Advisor to the Minister of Finance. He had previously served at MMA as well. He will be appointed to the post of MMA Governor at ministerial level if approved by the Parliament.

Hashim was dismissed from his position, citing failures in fulfilling the responsibilities associated with the role of MMA Governor. The Committee on Public Accounts noted severe shortcomings during Hashim's tenure, coinciding with a period of economic decline. The committee also noted that the MMA had not advised the government since November 17, 2023, on the key objectives outlined in the MMA Act.

Under the Maldivian Constitution, the president has the authority to remove the MMA Governor based on the advice of Parliament. Likewise, the appointment of a person to the post also requires the approval of the Parliament.
