President of Shaviyani Atoll Council elected to the LGA Board

The President of the Shaviyani Atoll Council, Mohamed Shiyam has been elected to the Board of Local Government Authority (LGA). He was elected to the board with the nine votes, as the elected member from among the Atoll Council Presidents.

Ismail Ali, President of Laamu Atoll Council, who ran against Shiyam in the election won six votes. The seat of the Atoll Council President-elect on the LGA board became vacant after the Kaafu Atoll Council President Mohamed Nimal resigned from the post in December last year, citing personal reasons.

The LGA board consists of nine members, out of which, three members represent the island councils, the atoll councils and the city councils. The other members are the Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Work, a woman member with experience in governance or public administration, a member of civil society, an employee of the Ministry of Finance and a Chief Executive Officer appointed by the President.
