The government has announced plans to implement a unified information system connecting all garages in the Greater Male' Region, starting September 1. The initiative is overseen by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and aims to streamline garage registrations and usage.
Currently, garages in Male' City are being registered with the Male' City Council, and these garages have the potential to be used for trading or as warehouses under the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. However, there is no existing system to verify or monitor secondary uses of these registered spaces.
The government has noted that vehicles are being imported under the guise of garage registrations, which complicates oversight. To address the issue, an integrated system will connect data from the Male' City Council, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and the economic ministry. The system will prevent a single location from being registered for multiple purposes and will cover private garages, government-approved parking facilities, and all locations designated as garages.
The development of the integrated information system is expected to be completed within a year. In addition, reports of garage owners unknowingly registering numerous vehicles and properties without garages being used to register vehicles are being reviewed by the transport ministry.
The ministry also plans to reform the current system for roadworthiness services provided by some garages. A new pool of automotive engineers and technicians will be established to ensure proper vehicle inspections, with this initiative set to begin on August 1.
