Construction of bridges connecting three islands to begin in 2026

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the practical efforts to construct two bridges linking Thilafushi, Giraavaru Falhu and Uthuru Thila Falhu are scheduled to commence in 2026. The announcement was made by the president during the official ceremony held to mark the Independence Day.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Dr. Muizzu pointed out that the current bridge project excludes a connection to Giraavaru Falhu to the north. Hence, during the recent visit by three ministers to China, discussions were held with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) of China, proposing the construction of a bridge linking these areas. The primary objective is to initiate construction on both bridges by 2026 and to connect them to Uthuru Thila Falhu by 2029. The president underscored the importance of extending the bridge to Uthuru Thila Falhu, which is earmarked for an agricultural project crucial to economic expansion. He also announced that land reclamation on the island would begin this year to ensure the projects proceed as scheduled.

The land reclamation on Giraavaru Falhu aims to alleviate the housing crisis in the Greater Male' Region, while Uthuru Thila Falhu is planned to be designated as an island specialising in agricultural and industrial activities.
