Parliament committee approves Habeeb for HRCM

The Committee on Human Rights and Gender of the Parliament has approved the former Vice President of the Election Commission of the Maldives (ECM) Ismail Habeeb, to serve as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). The approval was given with the unanimous votes of the committee.

The nomination for the appointment of a member of the HRCM was opened, following the resignation of Dr. Ahmed Adhuham Abdullah in October 2023. Following his resignation, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu sent a list of the candidates who applied for the post, in the order of priority. The president sent Habeeb's name to the Parliament seeking approval.

Habeeb has served at the ECM for a total of 21 years as a member and as vice president. He retired from the ECM on March 13 after completing two terms.

The HRCM is formed of five members.
