Parliament approves Habeeb for HRCM

The Parliament has approved the appointment of Ismail Habeeb as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

The motion passed with 74 votes in favour and three against. His appointment follows the resignation of Dr. Ahmed Adhuham Abdullah in October 2023.

President Dr. Muizzu had submitted a list of candidates for the HRCM post, ranking them in order of priority, with Habeeb's name forwarded to Parliament for approval. The Committee on Human Rights and Gender unanimously approved Habeeb's nomination.

Habeeb, nominated by President Dr. Muizzu, has over 21 years of experience with the Elections Commission of Maldives, serving both as a member and as vice president. He retired from the ECM on March 13 after completing two terms.

The HRCM consists of five members in total.
