Maldives condemns assassination of Hamas Chief Haniyeh

The government of the Maldives has condemned the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the Chief of the Political Bureau of Hamas.

In a statement made public by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, the government called on all nations to uphold international law and international humanitarian law. The government also called the nations to work together towards finding an urgent and lasting solution to the Gaza crisis and ensuring peace and stability in the region.

Haniyeh was assassinated in the Iranian capital Tehran early on July 31, an attack that drew threats of revenge on Israel and fuelled further concern that the conflict in Gaza was turning into a wider Middle East war.

Haniyeh, normally based in Qatar, had been the face of Hamas's international diplomacy, and he had been taking part in internationally brokered indirect talks on reaching a ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave.
