The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) and the Maldives National University (MNU) have formalised an agreement to undertake an extensive study aimed at reducing electricity consumption and enhancing conservation efforts. The agreement was signed by the Managing Director of STELCO Hussain Fahmy and the Vice Chancellor of MNU Dr. Aishath Shehenaz, in a special ceremony held at the university. As part of this agreement, MNU will analyse and assess a decade’s worth of data.
During the ceremony, Managing Director Fahmy noted STELCO has granted access to MNU to its systems and facilities for conducting an independent research. He expressed confidence in the university's ability to carry out a thorough study and emphasised that the findings will be instrumental in shaping future strategies.
Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor Dr. Shehenaz stated the research aims to seek potential solutions to the concerns of the residents based on the data collected. She stated that readings from the bills issued and meter readings between 2014 and 2024 will be evaluated as well.
STELCO outlined the research’s primary goals include identifying issues in billing practices, assessing the impact of climate change and weather on electricity consumption, determining peak usage times, and developing more transparent and accurate billing systems. The study will also evaluate electricity usage across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. Furthermore, any identified billing discrepancies will be monitored, with the research expected to provide insights into reducing electricity usage and associated costs.
