Decentralisation system to be revised after public consultation: Gov't

Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar has emphasised that the goal is to provide financial empowerment to councils through public participation. He made the statement during the oath-taking ceremony of three newly elected councilors to the Male' City Council.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Adam Shareef highlighted the need for significant changes to the decentralisation system to enhance financial empowerment for councils. He said that these changes would be implemented after consulting with the public. He said that the objective of the government is to strengthen the decentralisation system and improve service quality through new ideas and innovations. He also said that the aim is to develop a decentralisation system that is sustainable, responsible, and participatory.

Additionally, Minister Adam Shareef highlighted the ongoing study by the Maldives National University (MNU) to identify issues within the decentralisation system. He also noted that the study is nearing completion, with the preliminary report expected next week and open for public feedback.

Furthermore, Minister Adam Shareef encouraged all stakeholders to submit their views on the decentralisation study responsibly. He also stressed that it is an excellent opportunity for the public to contribute to system improvements.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu prioritises strengthening the decentralisation system and empowering councils financially. In line with this, the government plans to allocate uninhabited islands which are not under council jurisdiction, for income generation over a specified period.
