Motion to dismiss PG Shameem sent for committee review

The motion against Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has been submitted to the Parliamentary Judiciary Committee for review.

Parliamentarian Mohamed Shahid submitted the motion in a letter addressed to Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla. Shahid argued that the prosecutor general should operate independently, free from any external influence, and in accordance with the primary policies set by the attorney general, without seeking to benefit any particular party.

In his motion, Shahid listed eight key reasons for Shameem's dismissal, including controversial decisions such as filing the sexual assault case against former tourism minister Ali Waheed, the corruption case against former sports minister Ahmed Mahloof, and the failure to appeal the dismissal of the 2020 "safari rape case."

Additionally, the motion included Shameem's decisions to drop human trafficking charges against former Parliamentarian Ali Riza, to dismiss charges in 77 alcohol consumption cases and 13 same-sex relations cases, and to refrain from investigating allegations against Ahmed Shafeeu, who is accused of same-sex relations, drug abuse, and mockery of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH). The motion also included Shameem's decision not to pursue charges in the ventilator corruption case.

Shahid said that with these allegations, it would lead to Hussain Shameem's dismissal from the position of Prosecutor General. The committee members present at the meeting unanimously supported the initiation of the no-confidence motion.
