ECM conducts survey to determine reason behind low voter turnout

Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has decided to conduct a survey, aiming to determine the reason behind low voter turnout.

Speaking at a programme aired on PSM News, Member of the ECM Hassan Zakariyya revealed that the survey will be conducted, as an activity to mark the Voters Day. This year marks the first time in which Maldives observes the Voters Day. Zakariyya disclosed that the survey will be held on an online platform, underscoring the crucial importance of determining the reason behind low voter turnout. Although this is not a scientific research, he stated that the results will be the unheard voices of the residents. He reiterated the commissions' commitment in voicing the concerns of residents to governmental authorities.

Furthermore, ECM's President Fuwad Thaufeeq stated that low voter turnouts indicates the lack of interest of the residents in democracy. He noted the exponential decline in the number of voter turnout, with every election. He expressed concern over the situation and emphasised the importance of resolving the issue.

The government organises elections and bi-elections, with great expenses, optimistic that all eligible voters will vote. However, ECM has voiced concern over the low voter turnouts.
