The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has said that two families evacuated from their homes due to significant damage caused by heavy rain are currently staying in temporary shelters. In total, five households have been relocated to these shelters.
The Maldives has faced widespread damage due to the heavy rainfall since August 11. As such, a rapid assessment revealed that some households have become uninhabitable, with many identified as vulnerable and in need of temporary assistance.
Speaking to PSM News, Chief Executive at NDMA Hisan Hassan said that five households have received temporary assistance, with some residents still in temporary shelters. He also said that 10 individuals from two households are expected to return to normal life soon.
The NDMA has provided temporary shelter to 23 individuals from five households, including 11 individuals from two homes in Maafannu district and 12 individuals from three apartments in Galolhu district in Male' City. The authority noted that these households currently lack cooking and sleeping facilities. There have also been 251 reports of rainfall in Male' alone.
The NDMA highlighted that the floods caused by the heavy rainfall have most severely affected Maafannu, where more than 130 households have been reported damaged. The authority is also currently assessing the extent of the damage, with the work expected to be completed soon.
