The National Drug Agency (NDA) has announced the government will increase funding for drug addiction treatment, adding an additional USD 1.9 million to next year's budget. The decision was revealed during a ceremony organised by the Drug Court to recognize and support individuals who have completed their rehabilitation programmes.
Speaking at the event, NDA Board Chairperson Lubna Mohamed Zahir Hussain emphasised the importance of societal acceptance and support for those undergoing treatment. She also urged state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to assist rehabilitated individuals in finding employment, highlighting the crucial role of economic stability in their recovery journey.
Head Judge of the Drug Court, Abdul Sattar Abdul Hameed, praised the determination required to overcome drug addiction and called on the public to support these individuals. He pointed out that delays in treatment often occur due to inadequate facilities, stressing the need for prompt action to address this issue.
As part of the ceremony, a YouTube channel dedicated to raising public awareness of the Drug Court's work was launched. Awards were presented to employees of the Drug Court for exceptional performance and attendance in 2023. A memorial certificate was also awarded to Ali Adheeb in recognition of his committed service to the Drug Court and his efforts in the fight against drug abuse.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Hussain Riza Adam, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, Chief Judicial Administrator Aishath Rizuna, head judges of superior courts, Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NDA, Mohamed Raashid, NDA Board members, and Drug Court judges and staff.
In 2023, the Drug Court issued orders for 586 individuals to seek treatment for drug addiction. Of these, 419 successfully completed the treatment process, while 173 individuals were dismissed for non-compliance, leading to the implementation of the first sentence against them.
