“President aims to reform decentralisation system with expert opinion”

Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu aims to reform the decentralisation system of the country while taking into consideration the opinion and advice of experts.

Highlighting that the government is working tirelessly to reform the decentralization system of the country, Minister Adam Shareef disclosed that President Muizzu is aware of the changes that needs to be brought to the decentralisation system. He however added that the President, even with his knowledge instructed the relevant authorities to refer to advice and opinion of experienced people to make the necessary reforms.

The minister noted that the ministry is holding discussions with field experts and assistance is being provided on how the system should be shaped. As such, he said that discussions have been held with those who worked on the drafting of the Maldivian Constitution and those who conducted in depth research to introduce the decentralization system in the Maldives, as well as former ministers and mayors.

Minister Shareef notes that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu gives a high priority to grant local councils financial empowerment and to make them competent to deliver services required by the public. The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works is working to identify, ways to strengthen the decentralization system, such as a roadmap for public consultation. The ministry will also be holding meetings with the local councils and parliamentarians who have worked in councils.
