Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has stated that the development of sports fishing will increase investments and employment opportunities in the Maldives. Developing sports fishing is a presidential pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Minister Shiyam disclosed that President Muizzu has identified five areas for the development of sports fishing harbors. The harbours will be developed with fish stalls, an administrative office for competitions, restaurants and cafes, as well as fishing and barbecue facilities.
The minster states that the aim is to make these harbours available for Maldivians and foreigners. He added that the establishment of sports fishing harbours would increase foreign investments in the Maldives. He noted the move will increase revenue and create more job opportunities.
Minister Shiyam also stated that efforts are being made to develop reef fishing. He stated that a loan scheme has been prepared to be opened via SDFC for fishermen and processors of reef fish.
The government is working to further expand sports fishing and reef fishing to expand fisheries and economic activities, as well as to increase the income generated from them. In addition to these, the government is also making efforts to expand and develop mariculture and yellowfin tuna fishing.
