The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has launched a new strategic plan, aiming to minimise disaster threats. The strategic plan was launched by the Minister of State for Defence Aishath Safoora.
Speaking at the ceremony held to officiate the plan, State Minister Safoora underscored the importance of implementing the strategic plan with extra caution, due to the unfavourable weather conditions. The state minister highlighted the vulnerable environment of the Maldives, adding that the country is severely impacted with the changes in weather patterns. Therefore, she stressed the significance of implementing the plan and taking active measures to minimise disaster threats.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NDMA Hisaan Hussain acknowledged the authority's responsibility of managing disasters and also stated that the vulnerability of the Maldives is always exposed. He also stated that NDMA and other relevant authorities recognises the dangers and negative impacts faced by the Maldives during disasters.
Emphasising the efforts made by the NDMA to address the issue, Hisaan stated that more efforts were required. He highlighted the necessity of collaborative efforts to overcome the challenged faced during disaster management, making long-term plans, and including national plans and projects to minimise the negative impacts of disasters.
The strategic plan of 2024-2029 prioritises improving the emergency response and humanitarian assistance and building a society which is well aware and prepared to encounter disasters. NDMA stated that it aims to implement the measures outlined in the strategic plan and enhance the works of disaster management.
