AgroNat transferred to MIDFZ to boost Maldives agriculture growth: Gov't

Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has announced that transferring Agro National Corporation Limited (AgroNat) operations to the Maldives Industrial Development Freezone (MIDFZ) will significantly enhance the growth of the agricultural sector in the Maldives.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, Minister Saeed revealed that the government plans to begin developing an agricultural economic zone in Uthuru Thilafalhu (UTF) later this year. He emphasised the critical role AgroNat in this major project, valued at approximately USD 250 million. The development is being spearheaded by MIDFZ in collaboration with China's Harbor Engineering Company Limited (CHEC), following an agreement signed on March 28 this year.

Additionally, Minister Saeed highlighted the government's goal to establish special agricultural zones in the northern and southern regions of the country, as well as in the Greater Male' Region. He also said that the initiative aims to position agriculture as a significant income-generating sector.

Furthermore, Minister Saeed noted that important work is being carried out internationally for this project, including studies on sand and sunlight quality in an international laboratory. He also noted that the project is expected to create around 800 job opportunities, reduce reliance on imports, and lower food prices by increasing local production.

The development of the agricultural economic zone in UTF is being promoted by the government as the largest project ever undertaken in the country to ensure food security and promote agriculture as a sustainable industry. The zone will focus on cultivating around 15 types of vegetables and fruits commonly consumed in the Maldives. The project also includes land reclamation in UTF, the development of primary infrastructure, an agricultural industrial park, passenger and freight terminals, and other related infrastructure in the region.
