Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has upgraded the ice plant in Gahdhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll and resumed its services.
MIFCO notes that the Gahdhoo ice plant can now produce 50 tonnes of flake ice per day. The plant previously produced 25 tonnes of ice per day.
The company notes that it will be providing the fishermen with the ice buckets at the Gahdhoo ice plant. MIFCO notes this will make getting ice easier for fishermen as they will not have to extract it by themselves.
In addition to Gahdhoo, MIFCO is operating ice plants in Hoarafushi, Maduvvari, Gaafaru, Thinadhoo and Fuvahmulah City. The company’s Felivaru Fisheries Complex, Kooddoo Fisheries Complex and Addu Fisheries Complex are also equipped with ice plants.
Furthermore, 18 ice plants that were being operated by Fenaka have been handed over to MIFCO and the company is now in the last stage of the transition process. The government is working to provide easy access to ice for fishermen. These include the construction of ice plants in various parts of the country and the issuance of loans for the installation of saltwater fish cooling system RSW system on boats.
