Discussions held to establish fishermen register in collaboration with local councils

The government has held discussions to establish a register of fishermen in collaboration with the local councils. The meeting was attended by the Minster of Fisheries and Oceans Resources Ahmed Shiyam and the Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar along with senior officials of both the ministries.

During the meeting the Minister of Fisheries shared the latest updates on the works on establishing a register of fishermen. His ministry officials disclosed that the work is being carried out in different zones of the country, in collaboration with the local councils.

Meanwhile, Minister Adam Shareef suggested the formation of a special team of the two ministries to work together, to further strengthen the ongoing efforts. Assuring that the Local Government Ministry would provide full assistance, Minister Adam Shareef stated that information regarding the register would be shared with the local councils during the meeting held between the ministry and the councils.

The meeting also discussions on ways to further support the establishment of the register of fishermen. The establishment of a national register of fishermen is a presidential pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. One of the main purpose of the register is to ensure that fishing is recognized as an income generating occupation, recognized by the state like other occupations. The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources notes that so far, 200 vessels have been registered in the fishermen's register.
