NDA begins efforts to set up rehab centres in three regions

The National Drug Agency (NDA) has initiated efforts to establish rehabilitation treatment centres in three regions of the Maldives, as outlined in a six-month progress report released by the agency.

The report states that the NDA is acting on a recommendation from the Cabinet to implement community-based rehabilitation programmes for drug users. As part of the initiative, three locations which include, Kaashidhoo in Kaafu Atoll, Velidhoo in Noonu Atoll, and a site in Laamu Atol have been identified. The agency also said that work has commenced to establish treatment centers in these areas.

Additionally, the NDA said that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Malaysia’s Solace Asia Sdn Bhd to facilitate drug rehabilitation treatment abroad. The agency also plans to extend remand center services to all NDA residential treatment centres and enhance the scope of services it provides.

The NDA said that efforts to expand detox services across the country have also begun. As such, the Dhaandhoo Health Centre in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, in collaboration with the agency, has introduced detox services on several islands. Meanwhile, the Fuvahmulah Drug Detoxification and Community Rehabilitation Centre launched methadone treatment services in March this year. The agency also emphasised that these initiatives are part of a broader effort to expand rehabilitation services nationwide, providing a comprehensive solution for drug addiction.
