MMC opens opportunity for election of new members

Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts has opened the opportunity for the election of new members for Maldives Media Council (MMC), with a deadline of September 25. New members are being elected to the council, as the current ten council members tenure will be completed on December 14. Interested individuals are to submit the application form via mail to the ministry.

Individuals interested in becoming members of the MMC must be a Maldivian, above the age of 18 years. They should not have any form of criminal records. As such, they must not be involved in any crimes outlined by the Islamic Shariah, must not be involved in trading drugs and must not have been involved in any criminal offence for the past two years. Additionally, the individual must not be convicted of an offence for writing in a newspaper or magazine within the past 12 months.

MMC member's tenure lasts two years, and members cannot be re-elected for two consecutive terms. Candidates from registered media authorities are to compete for the seven seats of the media council. MMC consists of 15 members; eight members represented by media authorities and seven members elected from the public.
