Maldivians in Sri Lanka urged to remain cautious ahead of presidential elections

Maldives High Commission in Sri Lanka urges all Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka to remain cautious following its presidential elections, which is slated to take place on Saturday.

In a statement, the High Commission noted that Sri Lanka has implemented stricter safety and security measures in preparation for the elections and advised Maldivians to remain vigilant. They recommended that Maldivians carry relevant identity documents when going outside and advised against attending social gatherings or visiting voting booths during this period. Additionally, the High Commission emphasized the importance of avoiding outdoor activities during late-night hours.

The High Commission also called on Maldivians to follow the instructions provided by Sri Lankan police and adhere to safety guidelines. They advised residents to procure essential items in advance and to be cautious when traveling to Sri Lanka in the upcoming week for visa purposes.

These elections follow the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in July 2022, after which Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed as President by the Sri Lankan Parliament.
