President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised the most beneficial way for the Maldives is to work with countries around the world. He made the remarks speaking to media prior to his departure to New York to participate in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This marks his first appearance at the UNGA as president and coincides with the 59th anniversary of the Maldives joining the United Nations.
Speaking to the media before his departure, President Muizzu emphasised the importance of international cooperation for the Maldives’ development. As such, the president stated while the most beneficial path for the Maldives is to work with countries around the world, he plans to pave paths for Maldives through the UNGA meetings. His primary goal during this visit is to highlight the unique challenges faced by small island nations like the Maldives and to draw attention from major countries to these issues. He will also focus on strengthening Maldives' global presence and advocating for small island nations.
Moreover, a significant part of his agenda includes attending and addressing an open debate at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), marking the first time a Maldivian president will participate in such a discussion. During his address, the president is expected to share about the environmental challenges facing the Maldives and propose modern solutions for addressing them.
The president’s schedule in New York includes 14 key meetings and events. He is set to deliver his address to the General Assembly on September 24, participate in the Summit of the Future, co-chair interactive dialogues, and engage in side events focused on global cooperation. In addition, he will hold a series of bilateral and multilateral talks with leaders from various countries to strengthen relations and seek assistance in vital areas for the Maldives.
President Muizzu underscored the importance of fostering international ties, stating, Maldives must develop by strengthening relations with other countries. He noted he will assess the situation in Maldives and speak on issues important to us on the world stage.
The president’s visit to New York is scheduled to conclude on September 27.
