The Ministry of Education has initiated information sessions for students on the National Teachers Training Programme. The education ministry revealed that while information sessions have been held for the students of Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), the sessions will be conducted in other schools providing higher secondary education, this week.
The National Teachers Training Programme targets students who completed their secondary education, and aims to increase the number of trained and quality teachers. The ministry disclosed that under the programme, subjects and islands lacking teachers will be identified and prioritised.
Aiming to ensure that the teachers in school are local teachers, launching the National Teachers Training Programme is a presidential pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The ministry announced that the special programme will be officiated in October.
The biggest challenge in the education system is the shortage of quality teachers. As such, Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafiu stated that over 2,400 are required, with 250 teachers for primary grades.
