Islamic Minister plans to form council of imams to advise on imam affairs

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced plans to establish a council of imams to advise the ministry on policies concerning the affairs of imams. He made the announcement while speaking at the closing ceremony of the Imams' Conference 2024.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Minister Shaheem addressed the key concerns raised by the imams and expressed his commitment to addressing them. He said that one of the main goals is to provide annual training for at least 100 imams. He emphasised the importance of offering imams access to social housing schemes in the Maldives, and he plans to present the proposal to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. He also said that the initiative would explore housing options for imams in both the atolls and the Greater Male' Region.

Additionally, Minister Shaheem said that two imams would be appointed to each Islamic centre established around the country, including one dedicated to leading prayers, and a chief imam with a degree-level qualification. He also said that the ministry will assign representatives to areas with Islamic centres to ensure proper support and guidance.

Furthermore, Minister Shaheem acknowledged that some imams are facing health challenges and assured that they would receive priority under the national insurance scheme. He also stressed the need for an independent association of imams, free from political influence, and reaffirmed his intention to form a council of imams to advise the ministry.

The ministry said that the one-day conference saw the participation of 220 imams in person, with over 400 more joining online, bringing the total attendance to 620 imams from across the Maldives.
