Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Aishath Rameela has revealed that a new bill requiring the registration of pets in the Maldives has been completed. In an interview with PSM News, the Minister confirmed that the draft bill has been submitted to the Attorney General’s Office for review.
The proposed legislation focuses on the ownership and health of animals, with a key provision mandating the compulsory registration of pets. According to the Minister, this new law will help address various animal health concerns and make it easier to identify pet owners. She stressed the importance of the registration system in controlling the country's growing stray cat population, stating that without such a system, it will be difficult to manage stray animals effectively.
Additionally, the ministry is working to ensure that affordable and accessible medicines and vaccines for pets are available. Plans are also in place to expand veterinary services, including the recruitment of specialized doctors and nurses and the establishment of veterinary clinics across the Maldives.
Currently, there is no legislation governing livestock or animals in the Maldives. However, with the government’s recent focus on wildlife management, the establishment of a dedicated ministry marks a significant step towards creating a comprehensive framework for animal welfare and health across the country. The introduction of the new pet registration bill is expected to play a crucial role in improving animal management practices nationwide.
