Newly elected Sri Lankan President commits to strengthening ties with Maldives

The newly elected President of Sri Lanka Anura Kumara Dissanayake has pledged to enhance the long-standing relationship between Sri Lanka and the Maldives. This commitment follows a congratulatory message from Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Dissanayake's assumption of office.

In a social media post, President Dissanayake expressed his readiness to collaborate with President Muizzu to further solidify the partnership between the two nations. He emphasised their shared goals of regional stability and development.

In congratulatory message, President Muizzu conveyed his enthusiasm for working closely with Dissanayake, highlighting the importance of strengthening the historic ties that bind these neighbouring countries.

The Election Commission of Sri Lanka conducted a second preference count after no candidate secured the required 50% of the votes in the presidential election, as stipulated by the Presidential Elections Act of 1981. Dissanayake, the 55-year-old leader of the leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna party, was declared the election winner following this count.
