Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Administration, Adam Shareef Umar, has praised President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his exemplary efforts in advocating for the freedom of Palestine on behalf of the entire Islamic Ummah.
This statement came after President Muizzu's meeting with Palestinian President Mahmood Abbas on the side-line of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79). In a social media post, Minister Shareef highlighted that the President’s initiatives to support Palestine, a cause that requires global assistance, exemplify dedication to the Islamic Ummah and humanity as a whole.
During their meeting, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ strong commitment to supporting Palestine. He expressed hope that the Palestinian people would receive their rightful entitlements and pledged continued efforts to secure international recognition of Palestine as an independent and sovereign state.
The Maldives has a long-standing tradition of advocating for Palestine. This commitment is a fundamental aspect of its foreign policy, underscoring the nation’s dedication to justice and human rights worldwide. The Maldives co-sponsored a resolution in 2024 to support Palestine's admission as a full member state of the United Nations, which was adopted by the General Assembly.
The Maldives also welcomed the International Court of Justice’s Advisory Opinion regarding Israel's policies, submitting both written and oral statements on the matter. Furthermore, a telethon held on June 12, 2024, in solidarity with the Palestinian people raised over USD 1.2 million, which has been donated to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
