Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau has emphasised that efforts to increase police presence and activity will not be temporary and will continue indefinitely.
Speaking about the special operation launched by the Maldives Police Service (MPS) in the capital Male' City and the atolls, Commissioner Shujau highlighted several decisions made by senior police management to increase the number of frontline officers across the country. He noted that 360 officers are currently in training and being deployed. He also noted that special policies have been implemented to address the increasing number of road accidents in the Greater Male' Region.
Additionally, Commissioner Shujau pointed out that police visibility is on the rise, aiming for citizens to encounter a police officer within five minutes of traveling on the streets. He also said significant efforts are being made to achieve this, and the goal will be met once the officers currently in training are deployed.
Furthermore, Commissioner Shujau noted that MPS officers are stationed in 21 areas of the capital during rush hour. He said that a modern communication centre has been established in Male' and Hulhumale' to monitor and coordinate these operations, with senior officers on duty 24/7. He also said that the CCTV system of the capital city will be centralised and monitored from this centre.
Moreover, Commissioner Shujau said that the centre will enable real-time tracking of police activity, using technology to collect and analyse data critical to their operations. He noted that a special unit has been established to combat gang crimes, with officers regularly monitoring areas where gang activity is prevalent in Male' and Hulhumale'. He also said that progress is being made in reducing gang-related crimes, and senior officers continue to be deployed near schools for enhanced security.
