Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Shamman Waheed has reaffirmed the government's commitment to resolving the issue of illegal immigrants within the next three years.
In an interview with PSM News following the launch of an immigration inspection initiative in Hulhumale, Shamman reported promising results, stating that 95% of those issued compliance notices attended the office as required. He noted that many individuals have successfully corrected their documentation and visa issues.
Shamman emphasized ongoing efforts to help foreign employers and workers regularize their status within the legal framework. He plans to extend these initiatives beyond the Male’ area to the atolls, with the goal of effectively addressing illegal immigration throughout the Maldives. He urged businesses to refrain from collaborating with illegal immigrants or harbouring individuals without proper documentation.
The recent inspection involved over 200 immigration officers, including the Controller General of Immigration and Deputy Controller of Immigration, Ahmed Ashfan, as well as officials from the Maldives Police Service, Health Protection Agency, Maldives Food and Drug Authority, and the Ministry of Economic Development. Operations were conducted across 27 zones, targeting shops, salons, and garages where foreigners are employed.
The inspection aimed to identify individuals living in the Maldives without permits and illegally engaged in small and medium enterprises. Those found in violation of the law were offered the opportunity to regularize their status, and employers were advised regarding their obligations. While previous administrations have struggled to tackle the issue of illegal immigration effectively, the current government’s decisive measures have garnered public support and praise for the immigration authority’s efforts.
