Discussions on relocating Hirimaradhoo residents initiated

Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, has announced that the government has begun talks regarding the relocation of Hirimaradhoo residents in Haa Dhaalu Atoll to another island, following a request from the community.

During a meeting with Minister Adam Shareef last month, the residents expressed their desire to move to Thulusdhoo in Kaafu Atoll. According to the latest census, Hirimaradhoo is one of the least populated islands in the Maldives, with only 293 inhabitants.

In an exclusive interview with PSM News, Minister Adam Shareef stated that if residents wish to relocate, they can submit their requests to the government. So far, two islands have made such requests. He emphasized that, as directed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, discussions have commenced regarding the potential transfer of Hirimaradhoo's population.

The Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development will oversee the resettlement process. The ministry has confirmed to PSM News that these discussions are already underway.

In addition to Hirimaradhoo, residents of Rakeedhoo in Vaavu Atoll have also requested relocation. Minister Shareef reiterated that the government’s policy is to facilitate relocations based on the residents' initiatives, without external pressure.

The minister noted that President Muizzu is preparing a 20-year development plan for the Maldives. He believes that relocating smaller populations can enhance the quality of services provided to them.

Highlighting concerns about resource distribution in small islands, Minister Adam Shareef stated that many Maldivians believe migration could lead to improvements in living conditions. He also mentioned that past relocations of residents from various islands have yielded positive outcomes.
