WAMCO to offer waste disposal for vessel seeking bunkering services

Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has signed an agreement with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to provide waste disposal services to the vessels seeking international bunkering services. Under the agreement, WAMCO and MPL will collaborate to provide efficient waste disposal services to the vessels. As such, MPL will be responsible with waste collection and hand over the waste to WAMCO for waste management.

Addressing the media, following the signing of the agreement, MPL's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim stated that this service will be provided in a special facility designated for the purpose, which will be established on a nearby island. He stated that this initiative will play a pivotal role in boosting both, MPL's and WAMCO's revenue.

Meanwhile, Managing Director of WAMCO Mujthaba Jaleel stated that the corporation will offer "used oil" management services as well. He stated that the waste collected will be transported to the Regional Waste Management Centre in Kunburudhoo, ALif Dhaal Atoll.

Furthermore, WAMCO stated that the services will be provided by its employees residing in Kulhuduffushi City. Revealing that the corporation's landing craft will be utilised to transport the waste, it stated that more job opportunities will be available as the services expand.

While MPL has launched offshore international bunkering services in the north, it will provide 14 maritime services as well. The launch of bunkering services, is a part of the government's broader efforts of diversifying the economy.
