Gov't committed to boosting mental health care access: Health Minister

Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has highlighted that the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is committed to significant investments in mental health and ensuring easy access to quality mental health care. He made the remarks during his address on World Mental Health Day.

In his address, Minister Nazim stressed that good health encompasses both mental and physical well-being, citing the World Health Organization's (WHO) definition of health, which includes physical, mental, and social well-being. He noted that WHO data shows that one in eight individuals worldwide suffer from mental illness. According to the 2022 WHO STEP Survey, one in five people will experience symptoms of depression, while one in 20 may have thoughts of self-harm due to mental health conditions. He further highlighted the economic burden, stating that depression and anxiety account for the loss of 12 billion working days annually.

Additionally, Minister Nazim underscored the significant costs associated with treating mental illness when not addressed early, explaining that mental health issues negatively impact family incomes and national productivity, leading to an annual global economic loss of about USD 1 trillion. He added that the theme for this year's Mental Health Day, "Mental Health at Work," emphasises the importance of prioritising mental health in the workplace to improve employee well-being and boost institutional productivity.

Furthermore, Minister Nazim outlined the government’s goal to expand mental health services across the Maldives, particularly in the outer atolls, and stressed the need for creating safe, compassionate, and supportive work environments to promote mental well-being and achieve organisational goals. He also expressed concern over the rising prevalence of mental illness in the Maldives.

Moreover, Minister Nazim highlighted that mental health is a shared responsibility, not just for individuals but also for employers and society as a whole. As part of the government’s efforts, he said that the 1677 mental health helpline has been established and is available 24/7, with increasing numbers of people using the service. He also called on individuals to remain vigilant and supportive of each other’s mental health.
