The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has officially launched its "Decentralization Relations – Councilors Conference" in Kulhudhuffushi City. Kicking off this morning, the conference aims to address the party's concerns regarding the government's proposed changes to the decentralization system and to engage in discussions about its implications.
Local councillors and members of the Women’s Development Committee from the three northern provinces are participating in the event, including mayors from five cities. MDP President Abdulla Shahid emphasized the significance of the discussions taking place at the conference. He noted that the party introduced a modern decentralization system that has greatly benefited the Maldives.
In light of the government’s plans to reform the decentralization system, the MDP has expressed its opposition. Nonetheless, the President has encouraged the government to consult with experts during the reform process. Additionally, the government has commissioned a study through the Maldives National University to gather public feedback on the current system.
