Training of Trainers workshop, conducted by the National Institute of Education (NIE) in collaboration with Atoll Education Development Project (AEDP), has commenced today, aiming to train teachers teaching mathematics and science for secondary grades. The primary objective of this workshop is to develop the technical skills, teaching skills and pedagogical content knowledge of key stage three and four teachers teaching mathematics and science.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the workshop, Minister of State for Education Hussain Saeed Mohamed stated that teaching mathematics and science was prioritised in developed states. The state minister noted that this in turn plays a significant role in developing the nation in the fields of science and technology. Acknowledging that some students are not interested in studying these subjects, he urged all teachers to determine the reasons why students lack interest in these subject, based on the information they receive in the workshop. He further requested all teachers to exert maximum efforts to improve the grades students earn in these subjects.
Regarding the workshop, the Ministry of Education disclosed that the workshop will include provision of information on the use of formative assessment to enhance learning and teaching in secondary science and mathematics. It stated that the workshop will also focus in training teachers on how to use the assessment data to identify the gaps in learning.
Furthermore, the education ministry revealed that arrangements have been made to train 228 teachers from 114 schools in the Greater Male' Region and atolls. Additionally, two trainers will be trained from each school, including a trainer for mathematics and science. The ministry also stated that the trainers will provide the training to the teachers who teach these subjects in the schools where they work and other schools in the atolls after the ongoing training workshop concludes.
The Training of Trainers workshop will be conducted in two rounds. The first round is scheduled for October 13-17, while the second round is scheduled for October 20-24.
