The President has nominated Abdul Haseeb Ismail, currently the Assistant Director of the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM), as a member of the Commission, following the term expiration of Commission President Fuad Thaufeeq. His nomination has been sent to Parliament for review.
Fuad's term on the Election Commission concludes on November 23, and a new member will be appointed after Parliament approves the President's nomination. Applications for membership opened on September 12, and the President submitted Abdul Haseeb’s name to Parliament on September 25. His appointment is currently under review by the Parliamentary Independent Institutions Committee.
Abdul Haseeb has previously held senior positions in the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, joining the Election Commission on January 2. With Fuad’s term ending, the position of Commission President will also be vacant, requiring a majority vote among the five Commission members to elect a new President.
