Government to launch special pension scheme for athletes

Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has announced the government’s plan to introduce a special pension scheme aimed at establishing a robust system to recognize the national service of Maldivian athletes sustainably.

Speaking at the Maldives Sports Awards 2024, Minister Rafiu revealed that the National Council for Sports is in the process of revising the existing payment system to enhance salaries for national team athletes, players, and officials. The Minister expressed confidence that the government's initiatives will instil hope and drive progress among athletes. He assured all associations and players that the next five years will bring unprecedented growth and opportunities for sports in the Maldives. He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing athletes' concerns with courage and determination.

Minister Rafiu also acknowledged the crucial support of parents, clubs, academies, coaches, technical officials, and health workers in fostering enthusiasm for Maldivian sports and developing talented athletes. Additionally, he extended his gratitude to the media for their efforts in presenting sports information to the public in engaging and informative ways.
