Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has emphasized the urgent need for collective action against climate change. He made this statement during his address at the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers' Meeting, held in conjunction with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa.
In his speech, Minister Khaleel emphasized the priorities of the Maldives that align with those of small island nations, stressing the significance of sustainable societies, democratic principles, and a resilient economy. He called for increased financial support to help small island countries mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
The Minister specifically called for concerted efforts to implement the “Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for Small Island Developing States (ABAS),” adopted at the Fourth Meeting of Small Island Developing States in May. He also stressed the necessity of upholding democratic values and protecting vulnerable nations amid global turmoil.
Dr. Khaleel expressed his gratitude to the Commonwealth for its support across various sectors and assured that the Maldives would continue to strengthen its ties with the Commonwealth while upholding its core principles. The Commonwealth Foreign Ministers' Meeting serves as a vital platform for addressing key challenges faced by member countries and enhancing cooperation to establish achievable goals for the Commonwealth.
