Former President calls for unwavering Maldivian unity

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has underscored the importance of unbreakable national unity, urging Maldivians to uphold their solidarity with steadfast determination. His remarks were delivered at the official Victory Day ceremony held this evening.

“While our national landscape has evolved with global changes, legal progress, and the development of political parties, none of these should ever compromise our unity as a nation,” he declared.

Reflecting on the lessons of Victory Day, President Maumoon stressed that national principles must always come before political interests. He noted that the day stands as a powerful reminder of the Maldivians' deeply rooted willingness to sacrifice for their nation’s honour and dignity.

In tribute to the fallen soldiers, he described them as national heroes who defended the country's independence, sovereignty, and honour with their lives. He also emphasised that the day’s victory was a blessing from Allah, calling on citizens to strengthen their faith and deepen their love for Allah for their own safety and protection.

President Maumoon highlighted the significance of gratitude towards friendly nations and international organisations that support Maldivian sovereignty, particularly recognising those who offered assistance during Victory Day.

He further warned of potential threats, cautioning that shifting global political currents could pose sudden dangers to the Maldives. He commended President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s policies to strengthen and safeguard Maldivian independence and sovereignty.

Concluding his speech, President Maumoon made an urgent appeal. He noted that since the Maldives' conversion to Islam, the nation has been a spiritual pulse within the Islamic Ummah. He urged Maldivians to continue condemning Israel's inhumane aggression against Palestinians, especially in Gaza, and to maintain unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.
