The government has established and appointed members to the National Research Council. In a special ceremony organised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, held to inaugurate the council, the newly appointed council members were presented their letter of appointment by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry Aishath Hikma.
The nine members appointed to the National Research Council are as follows:
- The Council Chair (appointed by the higher education ministry): State Minister Ahmed Shafeeu
- Representative of the higher education ministry: Deputy Minister Aminath Shashee
- Representative of the Maldives National University (MNU): Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr. Raheema Abdul Raheem
- Representative of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM): Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr. Visaal Moosa
-Representative of an institution which actively engages in research activity: Director of Maldives Marine Research Institute Mohamed Shimaal
-Representative of an innovative institution: Engineering Manager of R&D at LottieFiles Naail Abdul Rahman
-Representative of a private college: Deputy Vice Rector of Villa College Dr. Mohamed Adil
- Representative of the Ministry of Finance: Chief Accounts Executive Mohamed Maaiz Munaz
Establishing a National Research Council is a presidential pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The council aims to conduct academic research, and conduct and monitor works pertaining to the production of intellectual goods. The members appointed to the council will be responsible to identify avenues for research and allocating funds for the fields, drafting policies to identify research fields, formulating guidelines on how funds will be issued for research purposes and the implementation of these measures.
