President reflects on first year in office; committed to aligning with people

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that, since taking office, he has dedicated the past year to practising good governance by aligning with the people. He made these remarks in his Republic Day address to the nation.

In his speech, President Dr. Muizzu emphasised the significance of Republic Day and the values of a republic. He noted that the presidency is neither a great victory nor a form of wealth, but rather a role of responsibility and service.

The President referenced "The Meaning of State, Leaders, and Responsibility", a book by his late father, Sheikh Hussain Abdul Rahman. He recommended the book as essential reading for understanding the qualities to seek in choosing leaders.

Reflecting on his first year in office, President Muizzu stated that he has prioritised standing with the people and practising good governance on their behalf. He is working to address critical issues overlooked by previous administrations and expressed hope for public support, noting that collective cooperation is key to resolving these challenges.

President Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling the promises he made when he assumed office. He assured that he would not engage in political retribution or influence the judiciary. The President also highlighted his efforts to strengthen the nation’s defensive and diplomatic standing, in line with his commitments.

He concluded by sharing that his greatest satisfaction lies in his loyalty to the country, proudly noting that he has demonstrated this dedication throughout his first 52 weeks in office.
