President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed that there is no greater fulfilment or joy than remaining loyal to the nation.
Speaking at the ceremony held to commemorate the Republic Day of the Maldives, President Dr. Muizzu outlined the government’s priorities in policy-making. He stated that the utmost priority is to ensure the independence and sovereignty of the nation and that the country’s interests are always put first. He reiterated the administration's aim of fostering strong bilateral ties and mutual respect with all neighbouring and distant countries.
In his address, President Dr. Muizzu stated that there is no greater happiness or fulfilment than remaining loyal to the country, adding that he has proudly demonstrated this commitment since assuming office. As part of this, he noted that foreign military troops stationed within the country were redeployed through comprehensive and diplomatic discussions.
Furthermore, President Dr. Muizzu highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to address the Maldives' stance regarding the United Kingdom’s decision to cede sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. Under international law, countries claim a 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around their waters. Mauritius has asserted its claim over the southern Chagos Islands, which the Maldives contends has impacted its economic zone due to previous government advocacy. The president revealed that efforts are underway to address this issue with a new approach, aided by international experts and a team of lawyers. He noted that the Maldivian government has already sent an official letter to the UK government regarding the matter.
Highlighting that the Maldives is among the countries with one of the largest exclusive economic zones, President Dr. Muizzu disclosed that the Maldivian Air Force has been deployed to ensure the security of these regions, along with UAV drones to further strengthen surveillance. He reaffirmed his commitment to focus on capacity-building, obtaining the necessary equipment, and pursuing training opportunities for Maldivians through close relationships with various countries.
