Skill-based roles are equally honourable and necessary: Minister Mariya

Minister of Higher Education, Labour, and Skills Development, Dr. Mariyam Mariya has emphasized the need for the country to focus on developing a skilled workforce. Speaking at a signing ceremony for agreements with MWSC, MACL, and Villa Resorts Pvt, Minister Mariya highlighted the importance of producing talented individuals in sectors that are essential for the country's growth. She noted that while professional jobs are often viewed as prestigious, skill-based roles are equally honourable and necessary.

The agreements, signed as part of the Sustainable and Integrated Labour Services Project (SAILS), aim to connect workers with employers and enhance skill development. Minister Mariya also stressed the need for career guidance for over 2,000 students who have completed grade 10, helping them explore diverse career paths.

Managing Director of MACL Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed highlighted that the agreement would help recruit locals for jobs across 33 sectors. Managing Director of MWSC Abdul Matheen Mohamed emphasized the importance of training the next generation of skilled workers in the water and IT sectors. Villa Resorts Pvt Ltd Group Director of Learning and Development Hassan Shamam reaffirmed the company’s commitment to building a skilled workforce.

The World Bank-funded SAILS Project will support these initiatives by teaching essential skills, increasing female participation in the workforce, and expanding opportunities for individuals with special needs. Additionally, the project aims to strengthen the National Careers Service and improve connections between workers and employers.
