Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed has announced the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) is expected to become operational by mid-2025. He made the statement during a meeting with the Parliament's State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Committee.
The government initially planned to open a section of the terminal before the end of 2024. However, following consultations with airline operators, the decision was made to delay the opening until the low tourist season next year.
“The airline operators advised us to open the entire terminal during the low season, rather than in phases, to avoid disruptions during the high tourist season. The President has decided to open the terminal in June or July next year,” said Shareef.
According to Shareef, construction is progressing as planned, with 85% of the work completed. MACL is working closely with the contractor to ensure the terminal is ready on schedule.
The new terminal spans 78,000 acres and will significantly expand VIA’s capacity. The current international terminal, which handles 1.5 million passengers annually, will be replaced by the new facility, designed to accommodate up to 7 million passengers each year.
The upcoming terminal will feature advanced amenities, including aero boarding bridges and the latest baggage handling systems. It will address the space limitations of the existing terminal, providing expanded areas for food and beverage outlets, retail shops, lounges, and other passenger services.
Once operational, the new terminal is expected to enhance the overall passenger experience and support the Maldives' growing status as a global tourism hub.
