President ratifies second amendment to Elections Commission Act

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Second Amendment to the Elections Commission Act (Act No. 8/2008). The amendment was passed by Parliament during the 53rd sitting of the 20th Parliament on November 25, 2024.

The newly ratified amendment introduces significant changes to the appointment and resignation procedures of the Elections Commission’s leadership. As such, the President is now mandated to appoint both the President and Vice President of the Elections Commission from among its members. These appointments are subject to majority approval by Parliament. The resignation process for the President and Vice President of the Commission has been updated. They must now submit their resignation in writing directly to the President. The amendment also guarantees that the current President and Vice President of the Elections Commission will continue in their roles unless removed in accordance with the law.

The Second Amendment to the Elections Commission Act will take effect immediately following its ratification and publication in the Government Gazette.
