The Prosecutor General (PG) Abbas Shareef has instructed the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to expedite the investigation into the disbursement of USD 2.85 million by the State to a company owned by former Member of Parliament Ali Hameed.
According to the Parliament’s Public Finance Committee, USD 2.8 million was disbursed to North Coast Construction Private Limited in 2023 for an awarded project. However, no work under the project has been completed to date, which prompted the committee to alert relevant authorities.
As the issue is a sensitive matter that significantly concerns the Maldivian State and public interest, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) said the PG has directed MPS to prioritise and expedite the case by forming a special investigative team.
Additionally, PGO has asked MPS to investigate any other project linked to those involved in the case as part of the ongoing investigations.
