The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had said the relief operation during the heavy rains across the Maldives last Friday was the largest ever conducted to help those affected by heavy rainfall.
NDMA said in a statement on Thursday that out of the 145 houses that had suffered flood damage in the capital Male’ on Friday, assessments of a 115 have been completed.
In addition, out of the total eight islands in the Atolls that had reported flooding, 73 houses from four different islands have been assessed, NDMA said.
According to NDMA, the damage to households in Male’ amounted to USD142,000 while the figure in the islands stands at USD51,800.
However, the amount excludes business, warehouses and agricultural land, NDMA added.
In the largest ever relief effort, dozens of people had been evacuated from flooded homes while NDMA had spent USD17,000 on the operation to provide food and other essentials to the affected.
Maldives had welcomed the new year amid dark clouds and on 3 January, Male’ experienced 161.9 millimetres of rainfall in 24 hours, which according to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) office is a national record.
NDMA with the help of the Male’ City Council had put up over 20,000 sandbags to prevent flooding across the capital.
