Conference on Haemodialysis to Enhance Dialysis Services in the Maldives

A conference dedicated to the advancement of haemodialysis services has commenced in the Maldives. Organised by MedTech Maldives, a leading healthcare product supplier, in collaboration with Japan's Nephro Corporation, the event seeks to explore avenues for enhancing dialysis services nationwide.

The 'MedTech - Nephro Haemodialysis Conference and Training' attracted a diverse group of nephrology experts, doctors, and nurses from the Malé City Group of Hospitals, including ADK Hospital and Tree Top Hospital. The gathering reflects a collective effort to share knowledge and improve healthcare outcomes, according to MedTech Maldives. The conference will feature a keynote address by Dr Behram A. Khan, Senior Consultant Nephrologist and Executive Director of Singapore's Renal Health Services.

Dr Shah Mahir, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Dharumavantha Hospital, attended the opening ceremony as the guest of honour. In his remarks, Dr Mahir underscored the conference's aim of enhancing and fortifying cardiorenal treatment in the Maldives, noting the significant number of patients seeking care at the Malé City Group of Hospitals.

Dr Mahir highlighted the conference's commitment to strengthening the healthcare services provided by the Malé City Group of Hospitals. He also noted the critical role of integrating technological advancements and providing comprehensive training for doctors and staff to enhance healthcare delivery.

Addressing the financial challenges involved, Dr Mahir remarked on the substantial costs associated with bolstering healthcare services. He stressed the focus on preventive measures to reduce the incidence of illnesses, highlighting the importance of early detection, particularly for cardiovascular diseases, and the need to raise awareness about these conditions.

Efforts to develop high-standard healthcare facilities and establish a robust data system were also underscored by Dr Mahir. "This will enable us to identify and address the issues faced by cardiovascular patients," he added.

Scheduled to run from 22 to 25 February, the conference includes information sharing and deliberations on haemodiafiltration treatment, kidney transplants, and cancer treatment. MedTech Maldives said it aims to train 100 nurses this year in these specialised fields, further enhancing the nation’s healthcare capabilities.

Established 16 years ago, MedTech Maldives has been a pioneer in introducing numerous technological advancements in healthcare and promoting dialysis treatment in the Maldives.
