Parliament Speaker Refutes Allegations of Influence, Interference

Speaker of Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla on Monday firmly refuted recent allegations of influence and interference by the executive over his office.

During the debate on Monday, main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentarian Meekaail Ahmed Naseem made serious allegations of influence and interference by the executive over the legislative body of the country.

When Speaker Abdul Raheem reminded him to stay on topic of the debate, Meekaail then alleged that the Speaker himself was “under the thumb” of the executive.

Responding to the allegations, Speaker Abdul Raheem insisted that no lawmaker had the right to comment on his personal health or other personal affairs.

Speaker Abdul Raheem pointed out he was elected as the Speaker of Parliament by the vote of the members of Parliament and he is carrying out the duties and responsibilities of his office independently without any influence or interference from anyone.

"The member will not know of my health or other personal matters. I am very independent. There is no obstacle or interference to executing my responsibilities," Abdul Raheem said.

He also urged lawmakers against making such false accusations to mislead the public.
