President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has designated Uhdhoo as a picnic island for the residents of Dhaalu Atoll. The announcement was made during the president's ongoing tour of all inhabited islands within the atoll, effectively transforming Uhdhoo into a designated leisure destination for the local community.
Uhdhoo, previously under private ownership, has now been transferred back to the government following the expiration of the previous agreement, according to a statement by the President's Office. The island's management has been entrusted to the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, which will oversee its affairs and facilitate travel arrangements to Uhdhoo. The ministry is anticipated to unveil the specifics of its plans for Uhdhoo in the near future, ensuring transparency and providing reassurance to the community.
President Dr Muizzu's visit to Meedhoo highlighted several pressing issues, inspiring hope among local residents. He promised comprehensive solutions to the island's housing challenges throughout his tenure. The president also pledged that the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry system would be operational by the end of 2025 and that waste management issues would be effectively managed through the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO).
President Dr Muizzu reiterated his unwavering commitment to the residents of Meedhoo, assuring them of prompt completion of these projects. He also committed to fostering sports development on the island. Addressing the space constraints faced by the local school, President Dr Muizzu promised a resolution within the current and following year.
